Kens a star.

I did miss a great opportunity to thank a few very important people who at the embryonic stage of putting the rules together gave me great encouragement and information. In fact in the podcast Ken actually asks about people who sent information in etc. and for done reason it just didn’t register. I’m putting it down to being interviewed by a bonafide wargaming personality.

So I wanted to thank some other “stars” who assisted in so many ways.

“ AJ” in the very early days gave me lots of great information and stories on his memories of the Enchanted Cottage and the WHC and the Sudan rules including various scenarios and background. That really helped me understand that this was a project. His blog AJ’s Wargames Table by the way is a cracker!

DC from Unfashionably Shiny was always so keen on things progressing and provided great

Support.

Steve from Steve’s Randmn Musings on Wargaming was so supportive as well with feedback on his reference sheets.

So many great people - Gerry and Mike especially. Dave “ Carry on with those Camels” Docherty for his promotion on the web and wargaming shows and Dave Ryan who is a great supporter through the excellent Caliver Books.

Of course Mark at the WHC and Richard and Andy at Legendary Wargames who continue to support the rules and showcase them at their excellent wargaming centres.

If I’ve missed anybody please accept my sincere apologies.

Thanks to all and please keep the stories and information coming.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5362692927621663860.post-42668733254760486422022-09-03T08:22:00.003+08:002022-09-05T07:34:52.140+08:00“Yarkshire Reet Big Game Podcast” guest spot

Lots of fun was had this week.

I as chuffed to be asked by Ken Riley of the fantastic Yarkshire Reet Big Game podcast to come onto his show and chat about my wargaming story and most importantly, discuss the putting together of The Sands of Sudan rules.

For those who haven’t previously listened to Ken he has a tremendous passion for the hobby and a unique interview style which is both entertaining and highly enjoyable. I had a ball as we chatted for over two and a half hours.

Copied directly below from Kens FB page is his description of the podcast. Do yourselves a favour and subscribe to channel as the past guests are fantastic and once again very interesting.

“It's been a month or so since the last episode so it's great to be back with another Big Game Chat.

This time we are off to Perth, Australia to talk with Carlo Pagano about wargaming in general and his reconstitution of Peter Gilders Sands of Sudan Rules.

https://kenrtai.podbean.com/e/episode-30-carlo-pagano-the-sands-of-sudan/

As usual we had disappeared down a rabbit hole within 15 minutes of the start but I'm sure you all tune into wargames Podcasts to discover the difference between Crown and Flat Green Bowling anyway !

It's back to the usual 4 part format, we learn about Carlos' wargaming history and his love of Big Games. Whilst the Quiz reveals yet more food choices from your Local Fish and Chip Shop as well as what pet hate has been banished into Wargames Room 101.

The Big Topic is all about Colonial Wargaming, something we haven't covered before on the show so there is a good chat about that before we move onto the Sands of Sudan Rules.

Carlo has managed to piece together the rules from old scraps of paper left at the Wargames Holiday Centre and information provided by former players. The rules have never been formally published as they were used as a bit of a palette cleanser between Big Napoleonic or ACW games during the Wargaming Weeks that Peter used to run.

Carlo has his website at

https://withpyjamasthroughthedessert.blogspot.com/

The rules can be obtained in the UK from Caliver Books

https://www.caliverbooks.com

And directly from Carlo in Australia.

it's great to be back on air and I've got guests booked in now till Xmas and pencilled in until Feb 2023, having too many guests is a nice problem to have.

My next guest is Painter and Author Mark Hides, a Yorkshire Lad, Tune in, in a couple of weeks time as we find out more about life as a Professional Figure Painter”

The Yarkshire Gamer”

If you get a chance, have a listen and support Kens fantastic podcast channel. Its great that the Sudan is being played no matter what the rule system is - Sands, BlackPowder, The Sword and the Flame etc.

A square prepares for the enemy

Just a reminder about loading the deck for every game.
Or should this particular blog post title in fact read "The Sudan Campaign battles on in Yorkshire"?

The campaign at the Legendary Wargames continues on unabated. The fighting looks fierce and objectives have yet to be achieved across all fronts.

Richard has been kinder enough to and through some more shots of their excellent game and it is always my pleasure to support and publicize wonderful actions and superb looking wargaming in "The Sudan". Even better is that this one is using "The Sands of the Sudan" rules.

Well done lads!
Well I had a few decks of “Ambush Cards” printed up a while back and I thought I would offer them to a few Solo Wargamers as part of a rules bundle to both support some gamers in isolation and to obviously give the rules a bit of extra promotion during a time where wargaming with opponents may be problematic.

A few variants

The cards (I actually refer to them often as Dave Docherty cards because having a deck rather than a dice roll for ambushes was his idea - brilliant!) are a small deck in card numbers which can be loaded or planned bu the umpire in a variety of ways dependant upon the scenario etc. The players actually pick and turn over the card, adding to the tension, whenever they get to a predetermined potential ambush area.

So one deck left included in the set of the rules of “The Sands of Sudan” which also incorporates the QRS and large Random Event deck. Price is AUD70 (new price to offset postage increases at the end of March unfortunately) including postage anywhere in the world.

If you feel like grabbing this particular set or just the rules in general please feel free to drop me a line via : carlopagano@bigpond.com
Cheers for now and stay safe
Well it’s been far too long since the last Sudan post. I'm sure that most wargamers know that at times other periods and gaming companions call for your attention and that has been my hobby life over the past few years.

As most of the globe goes into varying levels of self-isolation and lock down, I thought it to be apt to resurrect some posts of wargames of the past and the fun of a campaign played by like minded individuals. As I have mentioned in the past, this campaign umpired by myself and played magnificently by NWS members of the time Svend and Gil and current day members Dave and Geoff, was one of my great wargaming joys. So much fun and the spirit of the correspondence, orders, campaign messages etc. continue to be a credit those fine four chaps.

Great to see that Andy Lawson and his dedicated team have gotten Legendary Wargames renovated, pristine and ready for some significant miniatures actions for wargamers who enjoy gaming in the grand manner.

I'm always a massive supporter of folks who take the time and effort to turn their passion into a thriving business for them and a magnificent adventure for the many wargamers who desire gaming on a larger scale.

For many years the WHC through Peter Gilder, Gerry Elliot, the late great Mike Ingham and now the sensational Mark Freeth have navigated the concept of wargaming "holidays" that are simply spectacular. Having enjoyed an Austerlitz weekend many years ago up at Scarborough let me assure you, this Australian lad remembers it fondly to this day!

Legendary Wargames has taken up the mantle to game the wonderful Sudan campaigns using the Gilder inspired ""The Sands of Sudan" and the games are looking sensational. If you are interested in a game or two check them out at their website.

The games look spectacular and the figures are superb. Thanks for the support on the rules lads. The support of the Wargames Holiday Centre and Mark, Dave Docherty and yourselves makes all the difference.

All the best

A quick post folks just to let you know that a fresh short run of rules and cards have just been received from the printers. The rules are still proving to be very popular with the punters and the positive feedback I receive both via email, on the blog and on the occasional forum I am directed to.

Unfortunately when dealing with printing, more is always better in terms of price per unit. However, it is unfortunate that I can't justify a print run of 200 plus sets at any particular time for overall cost, storage and logistics.

The new price for the rules has gone up slightly to AUD45.00 a unit plus postage. This does however include the rules, Quick Reference Sheet and the wonderful Random Event Cards as an inclusive deal. Let me assure you the rules and their ongoing supply are very much a labor of love and devotion to the rules and my memories of the Gilder games in those wonderful wargames articles all those years ago.

I also know that postage rates around the world are getting more expensive all the time so have tried to keep the price increases very much under control whenever possible.

It is always a thrill to see a great wargame in action.

Since Mark Freeth has taken over the Wargames Holiday Centre and established himself in Basingstoke the games have been so wonderfully promoted on blogs, social media and live video feeds that you are able to "feel" the enjoyment from the lucky fellows that are in the thick of the action on the day.

Over the past weekend Mark Freeth and Dave Docherty (Mr One Man and His Brushes - superb blog!) have put on another spectacular "The Sands of Sudan" weekend with true Peter Gilder style and panache.

When I decided all those years ago to put together the rules and publish them for the first time, it was always to promote the period and the style of "us against the umpire" games which are always so much fun. It is so pleasing to see the Sudan grow in popularity across the globe in the past five years, whatever the rules being played. It is such an aesthetically pleasing period and one photographs superbly.

In the UK Dave Docherty has been a driving force in making these games so popular both on the show circuit and at the WHC. Good man.

You can see so many superb photos here and also, if you do have Facebook, you should search out the Wargames Holiday Centre and follow them and Mark. You will be so incredibly pleased you did.
I have been very much enjoying the Ancients gaming in recent times as well as some excellent Marlburian Black Powder games and still building up my Napoleonic 1805-07 project for General D'Armee.
It has been an age since I posted so please accept my apologies as I have been very, very busy stuff which has kept me away from blogs etc. All good stuff but busy nevertheless!

A most wonderful thing happened recently. The very clever Mark Freeth and Dave Docherty decided that it was time that the Sudan returned to its spiritual home at the Waregames Holiday Centre where Peter Gilders games originated (albeit at a different locale).

With their enormous effort, alongside some like minded chums such as Dean Whitehouse etc, they pooled to together some of the finest figures you would ever like to see put on a wonderful weekend of modified "The Sands of Sudan" for a campaign.
You are a star Dave!
Of course the equally sensational and supportive legend that is Mark Freeth. Great guy, so keen to see the hobby show-cased to the globe and a wonderful host by all accounts. Check out his wonderful videos here!
With the exciting news that Mark Freeth and Dave Docherty are taking the Sudan back to its spiritual home at the Wargames Holiday Centre for a Sudan mini-campaign week, I thought I would quickly have a look through the collection and see what additions may be required.
Anyone who looks on at Daves excellent One man and his brushes blog would see his Sudan collection is absolutely sensational. He and Mark intend to put on a campaign week with a mix of "The Sands of Sudan" and "Blackpowder" in order to even further expose this great Colonial period to more wargamers globally.
A great game was played the other week at the club which, though not a "Sands of Sudan" game, was an absolute stunner.
Stan, Craig and Chris decided to play a game of "The Man Who Would be King", a skirmish style game very different in size to the rules we normally play for this period. I thought the table looked spectacular and simply ha to put some photos on the blog to sparkle the visual senses.

The overall campaign map - direct photocopy from an early Wargames World

With two battles having been fought and a wonderful series of orders from players with some hopefully entertaining returns, the campaign was kicking along nicely. It was always important to be able to have an overall understanding of who was where and with whom, almost the plot for most episodes of "Real Housewives" but I digress...

The campaign map was given to the players showing them approximate locations of reported enemy as well as their exact positions. It certainly did not contain the level of information as shown in the particular image accompanying this post.

The squares with the orange "x" designated areas where the Mahdi's influence was growing and where Imperial encounters with enemy forces would be of a more "voluminous nature"! In other words, "There would Mahdists sir, thousands of 'em".

You can see from the map that the railway is taking shape and is making its was to Otoa having already linked with the village of Handeb.

Garrisons can be seen in their last reported positions and the columns and Gunboats are slowly making their way across the desert and down the Nile.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5362692927621663860.post-34460226468071758572018-05-17T09:25:00.000+08:002018-05-17T09:25:35.138+08:00Major General Davis victorious at Osmar Wells
One of my all time favourite units in the collection has to be this unit of Bengal Lancers. Beautifully designed sculpts from Peter Gilder, they still maintain the character and details within their poses and faces despite having been first made nearly forty years ago.
This particular unit was painted for me by Gerry Web of Castaway Arts fame many ,many years ago.
Apologies for the delay in posts this year as the other blog has been a bit more active with Napoleonic's and WW2 action.

I promise that this Sudan blog will be re-entering the fray with more campaign updates and some new models relating to the railways during the campaign.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5362692927621663860.post-39600839195478749282018-02-09T10:47:00.001+08:002018-02-09T10:47:18.121+08:00Sudan Heliograph team now complete - is it a sign?

These Redoubt Miniatures have been in the collection for many years. When I say collection I do mean "lead pile" and has painted up very well. I have based them on an irregular footprint so that they can have a suitably rugged environment to do their vital work in.
The Sudan Campaign started up again shortly after the victorious action at Tukar Plains. The forces continued to push on and the efforts to relieve the desert of the enemy was certainly gaining some momentum despite the occasional "challenge" put in front of the players.
As one can tell, the players were certainly getting into the spirit of the campaign and the correspondence and general esprit d'corps was outstanding. The campaign was about to start to heat up literally as the forces of the Mahdi and his very trusty Lieutenant's were about to make life difficult for the Imperials...well in a gaming sense at least.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com10
