Teaser - The Sands of Sudan

Working cover - some photographs will change however I like the design.

Quite excited now that we are very nearly ending all the pre-print work and preparing for the final push towards publication and having the rules "out there" so to speak.

With everything that has been going on I just wanted to get these average photo images of my screen on the blog to get some general feedback

Poor screen shot of my introduction...however you get the picture.

I promise the finished version will be straight!

  2. Looking good, when will you start taking orders? Maybe change the title slightly "The Sands of the Sudan 1884-1898" and, if possible, a sub-text telling potential buyers about the Peter Gilder link to immediately appeal to all us 40+ colonial gamers? That's the big selling point that sets these apart from all other colonial rules

  3. That's a very good idea SJW ...perhaps "wargaming in Gilders Sudan" at the bottom as the sub-title. Like that a lot!

  4. They look smart, mate. So much better than the ratty much-used printout I have! I will suggest a quick reference sheet would be useful, either as a photo-copyable spread at the back of the book, or a separate sheet.

    1. Hi AJ - will definitely have a QRS as well as the random event cards. I like the idea of SJW to have the Gilder Sudan in the sub-text. What do you think?

    2. I think it'll be a nice tribute to a nice fellah who pioneered so much in our modern hobby.

    3. I agree - that's one of the reasons he gets so much recognition in the main text of the rules. Without his input into gaming "in he grand manner" those early wargames magazines wouldn't have been the same.

  5. I can't wait. I will definitely buy a copy. Hurry on September! The subtitle suggested is an excellent idea.

  6. Is this going to be a PDF and/or printed set of rules, Carlo ? PDF would be good for your USA and UK potential buyers. Can't wait to see these in the flesh after all the build up !

  7. The plan Stephen is to be a printed set with the sheets, event cards etc. included. PDF is a good idea and I will need to get some expertise in terms of having it a format not too dissimilar to Simon of Big Red Bat fame, who has an index that takes you straight to the correct rule section etc. instead of having to scroll through the whole document. Yes, it has been quite a process to even get to this stage, however the end result will hopefully be worth it. Cheers mate.

  8. Eye candy!
Wargamer's love photos in their rules these days. Perhaps there would be gamers with photos they could share with you.
    Just a thought.

    1. ...and a good one. Have more photohraphs at this stage than I know what to do with and all are geared towrads these rules. If you have some though let me know as I am always keen to see great wargaming figures.

  9. Definitely offer PDF as well as printed version if possible, to make it easier for overseas customers to order and avoid shipping hassles - TFL do it very well, and I'm sure most buyers of the PDF will still want to print it out.

    1. I think I will a bit down the track...the rules will also include a diecut deck of random event cards and a laminated, score fold out Quick Reference Sheet. Certainly the supplements down the rack in PDF make perfct sense as well.

  10. "Peter Gilder's original rules for wargaming the Sudan campaigns revisited" might be a suitable sub title?

    1. What about "Revisiting Peter Gilders tabletop campaigns in the desert".????...he types rather optimistically!

  11. Sounds good to me - "Revisiting Peter Gilder's tabletop campaigns in the Sudan" does it for me, even if it means duplicating "Sudan"

And your plans for random event cards and a QRF make a PDF option even more important - I remember the headaches such things gave to Patrick at TVAG as well as Rich at TFL - but if you decide to offer hard copies make sure you cover the P&P properly!

  12. Carlo, mention of photos reminds me I did take some of the games at Peter's. They're probably in storage at my parent's since I had to leave a bunch of stuff behind when I emigrated to the US. I'll ask someone to look them out for me. If they can be found - and it's a big *if* - I'll also see if they can be scanned, and I'll share them with you if you like.

  13. TFL fan and US gamer here, and let me confirm that PDF is definitely the desired format for we overseas gamers. Would very much appreciated and hope that you offer these at the same time as the printed release or very soon afterwards! Very much looking forward to these rules.

    1. Hi B,

Will keep that in mind however at this stage a printed version is the primary choice for the intial master rule set for a host of reasons. Postage will all be at cost no matter where it will be sent in the world and the key aspect is to provide great value in terms of the rules, printed cards, Coated QRS etc. or around 20 pounds. Thats the plab at least. Thanks for te comments and please keep visiting for some updates.

  14. Hi, I used to use these rules many years ago and would certainly purchase a copy when they are available. Just let me know how to get hold of a copy and I will make the purchase.

  15. So glad to see Gilder recognized in such a wonderful way. I received the new Napoleonic set from Gerry Elliot called "In the Grandest Manner" Very inspirational and well put together, however, these rules that are so clearly derivative of Gilder's Napoleonic rules fail to mention Gilder himself (at least I have seen no direct mention on my first reading). This seems an unfortunate omission. Good luck with this project. We colonial gamers need as much fire in the steamer as we can get. I love playing my rules, but had lots of fun playing Gilder's too and his game (your game) provided the inspiration I needed to write my own game. Good luck with this....my cheque is in the mail as soon as you have it done.

    1. Thanks Chris - I admired those games from afar with every volume of "Wargames World" I purchased and for me this has really been a project of joy.
